Do’s & Don’ts About Vacuum Cleaners You Need to Know

by AZKO

Modified at

There is one thing that vacuum cleaner users often overlook: maintenance or cleaning after use. This is frequently ignored, causing the vacuum cleaner to break down quickly or not function optimally.

So, how do you properly clean, maintain, and store a vacuum cleaner? Check out the following do’s & don’ts:

Do - Use the Appropriate Nozzle

Each vacuum cleaner package usually comes with various types of nozzles (accessories attached to the end of the hose).

First, the crevice nozzle, which has a slim shape, is designed to suck up dust from narrow spaces, such as between sofa cushions and other tight corners.

Second, the dusting brush, which features bristles, is used to clean dust from mosquito nets, curtains, and sofa surfaces.

Third, the floor tool, which has a wide shape, is intended for cleaning floors and carpets.

This floor tool also includes a rubber strip to help push water when used for wet vacuuming. Additionally, it has a brush to lift dust, hair, or pet fur when cleaning carpets.

This vacuum cleaner can also be used to drain an aquarium—simply use the hose without attaching any additional nozzles.

Don't - Forget to Remove the Dust Bag When Vacuuming Wet Dirt

A vacuum cleaner will not function properly if you forget to remove the dust bag inside the tank before vacuuming wet dirt. This can also damage the dust bag.

Do - Wipe the Inside of the Vacuum Cleaner Tank

After vacuuming wet dirt, the inside of the vacuum cleaner tank will naturally become dirty. Clean it with a soft damp cloth, then wipe it again with a dry cloth to remove any remaining stains or watermarks.

Choose a vacuum cleaner with a stainless steel tank body for easier cleaning, especially when dealing with oil or other substances that leave marks on plastic surfaces.

Don't - Neglect Cleaning or Replacing the Dust Bag

Dust bags have a specific capacity, which is usually stated on the vacuum cleaner packaging. Once full, you should either dispose of the bag or replace it with a new one.

Most dust bags cannot be washed because they have fine pores designed to filter out dust particles. Washing the bag may cause the pores to expand, reducing its effectiveness.

There are two options:

  1. Dispose of the bag once it's full.

  2. Empty the contents regularly, even before it is full, to extend its lifespan.

The second method allows the dust bag to last up to six months. After each use, even if only a small amount of dust has been collected, remove the dust bag, open it, and empty it into a trash bin. Once clean, close the bag securely with its clip and reattach it to the vacuum cleaner.

Do - Disassemble All Vacuum Cleaner Parts Before Storing

If the vacuum cleaner is not used daily, store it in a clean, dry, and enclosed space.

To prolong its lifespan, detach all parts from the main body, such as the hose and nozzles. Neatly wrap the power cord and secure it with a tie or rubber band to prevent it from dangling.

Don't - Use the Vacuum Cleaner for More Than 30 Minutes

Vacuum cleaners designed for household use typically have a maximum operational time of 20–30 minutes. Exceeding this limit may cause the motor to overheat.

If you need to continue cleaning, let the vacuum cleaner rest for about 15–20 minutes until the motor has fully cooled down. After that, you can resume vacuuming.

You can find a variety of vacuum cleaners at AZKO stores or shop online through ruparupa.
